UNDP launches “Powerful synergies: gender equality, economic development and environmental sustainability”
On 27 September, a high-level event was organized by UNDP on the launch of the publication “Powerful synergies: gender equality, economic development and environmental sustainability.”
The meeting featured Winnie Byanyima, Director of the Gender Team at UNDP; Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya to the UN; Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate; Tarja Halonen, former President of the Republic of Finland; Amina Mohammed, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Post-2015 Development Planning; and Rebecca Grynspan, Associate Administrator of UNDP.
All panelists welcomed the publication and highlighted the link between sustainable development and the empowerment of women, as well as the need to take this link into account in the MDGs and the Post-2015 agenda. The importance of partnerships between governments and the civil society was also emphasized by panelists.
The publication is a collection of evidence-based papers by scholars and practitioners that explore the interconnection between gender equality and sustainable development across a range of sectors and global development issues such as energy, health, education, urbanization.
