The NGO Forum on Environment (FOE)

FOE Agenda

FOE will work on substantive issues related to human rights, the SDGs, programmes, policies and activities of the United Nations System as well as organise panel events related to Earth Day, to the UN Decade of Biodiversity and the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All.

In the course of the year FOE will offer a variety of training sessions related to the United Nations system. These sessions will also include subject matter and expert speaker presentations on environment related issues.

During the year FOE will enhance its social media presence to better utilize such media as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. FOE is working on establishing video-conferencing links as part of an effort to build interactive bridges with NGOs who cannot be present but who are keen to share and voice specific concerns and issues that FOE members can raise at events at the United Nations.

Important to Link major UN Agendas into ONE NGO Agenda

Human Rights (HR) >> Climate Mitigation (CC) >> Sustainable Development Goals  (SDGs)

Human Rights:

all negotiations and outcomes related to CC and the SDGs need to be embedded in a solid human rights framework, so that indeed “nobody is left behind

Climate Justice:

Many, mostly Western, states do not want human rights to be included in any UNFCC document, as ratification of a number of Treaties and Conventions mean that states have legal obligations and of consequences, responsibilties.

It is obvious that SDGs are an important factor  towards climate mitigation and climate justice..

Important for the COP21 (“Paris Agreement”) to aim for long-term environmental stability.

SDGs:

It is paramount for NGOs to make sure SUSTAINABILITY is the main focus of development and for these as well to be embedded in a human rights framework, for the SDGs to contribute to long-term environmental stability and to climate mitigation

On special procedures of the Human Rights Council:

The special procedures of the Human Rights Council are independent human rights experts with mandates to report and advise on human rights from a thematic perspective. The system of Special Procedures is a central element of the United Nations human rights machinery and covers all human rights: civil, cultural, economic, political, and social. As of 27 March 2015 there are 41 thematic mandates.
